On Saturday 8 August 2026, at around 7:00 p.m., a brown bear attacked a 55-year-old cyclist at the barrier gate at the entrance to Valčianska Valley, near Martin in northern Slovakia and close to the Snowland recreation resort. The man suffered multiple bite and laceration wounds. He managed to make his own way down to the nearest cottages and is in stable condition after surgery at the hospital in Martin. The bear has not been identified. Our database of documented attacks since 2021 shows that this was the second attack in the valley. The facts below can be verified from the cited sources.

How the attack unfolded
The cyclist was attacked at the valley entrance, which most visitors to Snowland and the cottage settlement pass through. The most precise published account comes from the bear intervention team (all quotes are our translation from Slovak):
“The man, who was riding a bicycle, was attacked by the animal near the barrier at the entrance to the valley. The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m., leaving the victim with multiple bite and laceration wounds. After the attack, the injured 55-year-old man managed to make his own way down to the nearest cottages, where emergency medical services were called via the 112 emergency line.” (Juraj Žiak, Fatra Brown Bear Intervention Team, via the TASR news agency, 9 August 2026, in Slovak)
Two ambulance crews responded.
“The fifty-five-year-old man with multiple open wounds was transported by paramedics to the hospital in Martin.” (Petra Klimešová, spokesperson of the national EMS dispatch center, via TASR, 9 August 2026, in Slovak)
The man underwent surgery and remains hospitalized at the orthopedic clinic. He has not yet spoken publicly, so the account of the encounter is based solely on statements from the emergency services.
What followed
- 8 August, evening: The Fatra Brown Bear Intervention Team arrived immediately and worked with police. They searched the entire area, but the attacking bear was no longer there. Monitoring continued until about 10:00 p.m.
- 9 August, morning: State conservation officers resumed monitoring early in the morning. They found no artificial attractant or feeding site at the scene or in the wider area. The bear was not identified.
- 9 August: The team issued a press release and, together with the municipality, urged residents, cottage owners, and visitors to exercise increased caution in forest terrain.
- 9 August, evening: An injured man was found near Turany, on the opposite side of the Turiec basin. The State Nature Conservancy (ŠOP SR) described the two cases as two incidents in the region in one weekend.
- 10 August, morning: The intervention team announced that it had eliminated a female bear with two cubs near Turany and designated her as the attacker in that case. The Valčianska Valley bear remains unidentified.
What to watch for when reading the news
“The bear pulled him off his bike.” This wording came from TV channel TA3 and was picked up by the news agencies. The intervention team’s official statement says only that the man was attacked near the barrier. It does not describe exactly how the contact unfolded, including whether the bear knocked him down or he fell while dodging. Until the victim speaks publicly, the attack sequence remains unconfirmed.
“A man over 70 on a private forest road.” The website plenum.sk gives the victim’s age as over 70 and reports that the attack occurred on a private road with warning signs. The official sources, both the intervention team and the emergency services, consistently identify the victim as 55, and no other source confirms the private-road claim. This page therefore follows the official information.
“The second attack in Veľká Fatra this weekend.” That is how ŠOP SR framed the cases in its statement on the Turany incident. Geographically, however, Valčianska Valley belongs to the Lúčanská Malá Fatra range. The label refers to the administrative territory of the Veľká Fatra National Park authority and its intervention team, not to the mountain range where the attacks happened.
“On Friday 7 August.” A regional MY Turiec article about the Turany case dates the Valčianska Valley attack to Friday 7 August. TASR, TA3, the police, and an earlier article on the same site all say Saturday 8 August, so this page keeps the Saturday date.
The location in context
Valčianska Valley has appeared in our records before. In October 2022, a female bear attacked a lone trail runner at Valčianska Javorina at the head of the valley, roughly five kilometers above the village. He survived three separate contacts but suffered critical injuries, and ŠOP SR assessed the attack as a defense of cubs. The August 2026 case occurred at the opposite end of the valley, at its mouth in a busy recreation zone. Like the July 2024 attack on a cyclist near Turany, it happened in the early evening.
